There are certain subcategories of mysteries I've discovered
that I particularly enjoy. At the moment there are three:
- PoliceProcedurals (the kind I like are (typically British) with gender issues, or race issues, humor and a bit of grue)
-
The balance of humor and intensity is essential -- presence of women in the books (in many cases as secondary characters or as part of a team) really fills out the story for me.
- HousewifeDetectives? (Amatuer detectives with a voice and an attitude)
- Many of the ``housewife'' mysteries fit this category for me.
- GothicDrearyMysteries? -- Gothic and miserable, but with a light at the end of the tunnel.
- Minette Walters is a good example of this. When I was reading The Shape of Snakes it felt more real than real life . . .
Some resources for those trying to get complete lists of mysteries or books by authors includes:
Some mystery websites (I haven't had a chance to check these out yet):
I'm working my way through some of the classic authors. I like to follow either internal chronological order or publication order. Here's some links to help me with figuring out "what next?" . . .
